EMULATORS

So now the PSP homebrew scene has really kicked off and you can run homebrew games and emulators on your PSP.

But how do you do it?

1. You will need

- A PSP with v1.5 firmware - if you have upgraded your PSP to the later v1.51 and v.152 none of this will work right now but be patient it will work in the future.

- A memory card - the standard 32Mb that came with your PSP will do but the more you want to install the more capacity you will need.

- The KXpolit tool - this is the thing that does the business. A piece of software that sits on your PSP and generates the code that runs from the memory stick.

- A PC to PSP link cable - how else are you gonna put the files on that memory card?

- The piece of homebrew you want to run - there is loads out there now, take a look around and you will find them (or just download the pack below)

2. Run KXploit and point it to the v1.0 Eboot you want to convert.

The program will then generate the files in two directories - one will end with a '%' and is the dummy file.

3. Copy both directories across to your memory card and hey presto! You can now run the hombrew by going to the memory stick option on the Game menu on your PSP/

Alternative Methods :

KXploit Homebrew Pack v2.0 - cr4igp4lmer created this pack of a lot of the homebrew currently available for the PSP. The archive file contains most of the emulators up to 24 June 2005. Just copy these files to the PSP\GAME\ directory on your memory card - both directories need to be there (the original and the '%' folder).

Sei PSP Tool v0.3 - This is a great program that lets does everything for you. Connect your PSP, open the tool, browse to the homebrew Eboot of the homebrew you just downloaded and tell it what you want to call the game folder (e.g Snex9x - some applications require a specific name) and the program will generate the files and copy them straight to the right folders on your PSP.

Emulation :

Obviously what you want to do most is play classic console games on your PSP but you dont know where to get them?

RomWorld - Have a look right here and you should find most of what you are looking for - I like the Top10 lists for each system.

You need to copy these ROMs (after you extract the archive to the folder without the '%' on your PSP memory stick.

So its all installed but you cant run Mario as fast as you were hoping? Well the PSP has a SpeedBoost (Sony limited it to half of what it is actually capable of to save battery life). You can activate this temporarily AND AT YOUR OWN RISK to make the ROMs run faster. (I havent tried this so dont ask me for help)

Also keep an eye on this Gameboy Advance Emulator (its running real slow right now and not really playable buy it will be very good very soon im sure).
